Relay For Life and Penny Wars!Saturday, April 02, 2011
Relay For Life and Penny Wars
(From http://www.relayumd.org)
“The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.
Although every Relay For Life is different, there are certain traditions at all Relays, no matter where they are held. These traditions help participants celebrate, remember, and fight back.”
Every year, UMD hosts a Relay For Life, which is a life changing event that gives everyone a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Members of each team will take turns running or walking on a track for 24 hours, and at least one member must be on the track at all times. This year’s Relay For Life is on April 2-3, 2011. We need 8 to15 people on our Relay For Life Team. The only requirement is a $10 registration fee.
Our goal is to raise $1,000 for the event. In order to help fundraise, we will be doing a Penny War. Each Family has a 2-liter bottle for collecting coins or dollar bills. The value of any pennies collected by a group count positively toward that group’s point total, while the value of other coins or dollar bills are subtracted. The Family with the highest total wins the war!
To sign up or to donate, go to http://www.relayumd.org and look for the Filipino Cultural Association under Relay Teams.
